Unexpected falls can lead to severe injuries or even death, especially for the elderly. To combat such accidents, Dr. Wolfgang Müller-Adam is currently heading the i Gel project, a protective garment that turns into a a full body airbag. Originally inspired by the hedgehog that curls up for protection, the sensors in the i Gel would detect a crash and cause 20 nitrogen airbags to inflate. The actual placement of the life-saving bags would cause the individual to form a fetal position like a hedgehog and create a ball of safety. Although the i Gel concept is yet to be fully conceived, such advancements in
technological science for the care of the growing number of senior citizens are a wise investment.
